After returning from
Minnesota, we spent the fall and winter at home and the occasional
visit to family and friends in the RV. The winter was pretty cold (by Texas standards) and those
camping times were not quite as much fun, having to spend lots of time inside.
New Year’s trip found us south of Tyler. We were below freezing for several
days and nights.
There were 4 RVs in
our group. Two of them froze up and had no water. Dennis and his brother had
wrapped the water pedestals as well as the hoses, so we were OK. I told him I
would not complain ever again when he wanted
to be over cautious! We did enjoy the days playing cards in our RV with
everyone.
Dennis has wanted to
try and put the RV in a campground on the bay for a month and come down a few
days a week to fish and enjoy the scenery. We had our name on the list at a
park on the bay for over a year when a site became available that backs up to the
water. So for the month of March we are parked here at Galveston Bay. We are
able to leave the rig set up and come
and go as we can.

Sunset view from behind RV |
It is sometimes
difficult to decide what to leave and what to take home
and then what to bring
back again. But we have managed quite well and it is nice to not have to set up
and take everything down each time.
The first week it
was a little cool with us wearing wind breakers when outside. It can be windy on the bay. After that it has
been nice weather and I enjoy seeing Spring come to life.

Dennis started doing
more salt water fishing this year. There are a few public fishing piers off the
sea wall that he has been to. Not catching lots but Tim actually caught a
stingray one day while he was fishing with his Dad. He had quite a time getting
it off the hook and back in the water.
There are LOTS of
birds in the water and on the piers in the spring. They

all squack at once and
it can be noisy. At sundown they all go somewhere only to return the next
morning. We are told these birds have a peculiar mating ritual. The male bird
_______s (you know)… on the pier. The female bird chooses a pile she
likes and sits on it. Sometime later the male bird finds her and they fly off
together into the sunset to mate for life. Too much information?????

We enjoy sitting out behind the rig watching the activity of the bay and the beautiful sunsets.
There is a boat dock area in the park with an observation dock to watch the boats and a place to fish. It is beautiful in the evenings.
There are lots of other birds and it is fun to watch them swim and walk around and interact with each other.

Looking for food! |
We have a pair of ducks who come up behind our RV and sleep. They are not afraid of us and I think they want us to give them food.....

In the park is a mixture of people. The park only rents by the month or longer. Some people come on weekends. Some are contract workers who stay for an extended period. Not a bad place to come home to for a period of time. We have a couple of displaced people from Hurricane Harvey . One camper housed a mother and adult son. Both of their homes were damaged and they have been here all this time. On one trip

back for us, they were gone so hopefully they are back in their homes. There is still one FEMA trailer here, but we have not seen them while we are here so don’t know their story. As is usual in an RV Park we have met some nice people. One day when we returned to Galveston, we noticed our satellite dish had been moved to under the RV. There had been a rainstorm the night before and it apparently had blown over as the handle was broken. We never found out who moved it for us, but are grateful they did!
On one of our trips down, we went into Galveston. It was Spring Break so the city was full of people.
We enjoy eating at Fisherman’s Wharf. It is down by the Cruise terminal and it is fun to watch the ship loading and heading out to sea when a ship is in. You can also book a boat tour of the harbor a little down the way, along with more restaurants.
You can walk to the Strand from the restaurant. The Strand is a multiple block area with shops and eateries. Our favorite spot is the ice cream, candy parlor….. The area was filled with people enjoying the weather and their visit to Galveston.
Along the sea wall the surf was pretty high, but even in 60 degree weather there were quite a few of brave people in the water.
We have been to Galveston a number of times, but for those who have not, there is lots to do besides the water. There are several home tours available. These are homes that survived the big hurricane of 1900 and lots of history with them. Galveston also has an oil museum, boat tour, a pirate ship and Moody Gardens.
