Leaving Texas

When you drive from Houston to Dallas on I45, a must stop is the Cooper Farms store at Fairfield. In the summer they have fresh veggies and wonderful peaches!  Out of season you can always stop and get peach ice cream and baked goods.

We had a good visit w friends and family in the Midlothian/Waxahachie area of the MetroPlex. Lots of catching up with those that had moved from Sugar Land and those who are close friends from our time in the Dallas area.

We spent time with daughters family. Dennis helping with chores and me and granddaughter cooking up stuff. The big treat - that is becoming a tradition - is homemade tacos for dinner! Kelsey & I made all the fixings and Tif fried fresh taco
shells. Yummo! Then for dessert we made Brookies. That is brownie cookies. You mix up brownie mix and cookie mix. Then you put brownie mix in a muffin tin and top with cookie dough - Brookies. They are a hit everytime.

Some of us even made it to church!

Planning to have a less than 3 hour drive to our overnight in Durant, OK. While driving up Hwy 75 North of Dallas another car pointed to our RV. We pulled over and had had a huge blow out…. We called Coach Net — our roadside service and they came and changed the tire for us. The big problem is the wheel might be ruined. So we had to find a tire place for a new spare and wheel. While we were waiting for the service, a police car came by - City of McKinney - and did not even stop. You could plainly see the tire was blown out from his car. Guess he was busy….Hopefully, this has been a minor problem that won’t repeat itself on our tour. Thankful for good RV Roadside Service.

Casino RV parks are very nice!
Used to be on a RV trip, you had a roadmap and pay phones. When you needed a tire place you just asked around town.  We used the cell phone to call the roadside service and internet to look up tire places; all while driving down the road with our devices plugged in to the truck. Then the lady with the nice voice on the cell told us where to turn to get to Discount Tire in Durant, OK. Highly recommended, they got us a new tire and we did not need a wheel. Of course, when you park a 36 foot 5th wheel and truck in front of their bays, they get right on it!

Riverside RV Park
Nice laundry building
We made it to Bartletsville, OK in plenty of time to set up, do a load of laundry and sit outside for a while. The weather was so very nice and cool.

Next blog: Bartletsville and some history lessons.!

Fall 2018 RV Trip: Getting Started

Well, here we go again. Another extended trip in the RV. We are leaving Sugar Land in August - dog days of summer.  We are loaded and ready to go. I always feel like I am leaving the country when I leave Texas, so I have to put in enough Rotel and Black Beans to make it before re-entering! The yard is looking pretty good considering the 105 heat index we have been enduring.

Again, the house will be well cared for and looked after by our son while we are gone.

Hanging basket - hanging in there!
We will, of course, travel first to Midlothian to see daughter’s family. Also, will catch up with friends.
We then travel up to Michigan, stopping along the way to see more family, sightseeing, then spend some time with Debbie and Chris in Michigan. They spend the summer there each year.

We will stop after in the Upper Peninsula, meeting friends, who will show us around. We have never been there so am excited to see some new things. I hear it is beautiful.
Our sitting out place at home.
The main reason for this trip is to go on an RV Fantasy Tour. We will meet other campers - probably about 25 - in Bemidji, MN at the headwaters of the Mississippi River. We will then travel along the river all the way to New Orleans, where the river goes into the Gulf. Along the way we will stop at different points to sight-see. It will take 34 days to complete the route. This tour group does all of the planning and reservations for us. It is a good travel company for Rver’s. This tour was so popular we had to book 2 years in advance and pay a down payment then. If you read my New York blog from several years ago, it is with the same company. This part of the trip will be a challenge for me to see if I am able to sight-see all day, travel from place to place, and write the blog every  few days or so….  I want everyone to enjoy the trip with us!
One more Mexican dinner
←This is the last good seafood we will have  until New Orleans. Fisherman's Wharf at Galveston!

We might have some oranges ready
when we get home!

So hang on to your hat and ride along with us as we begin another adventure in the RV.

SPRING 2018: LAKE LIVINGSTON STATE PARK

After leaving Galveston we went to Lake Livingston State Park to meet some friends for a few days before taking the RV back to storage.
The weather was a little cool the first day, but has been perfect weather since.

The state park has a lot of campsites, but one loop has full hookups and is directly on the lake. To get one of these sites you have to book months in advance.

We are booking for a few days in the fall and  had to take a spot across from the lake (but with good views) because the lakefront were already booked - and we booked for weekdays, not weekend!

I know this fisherman!

We sit at our site and watch fishermen,
people walking, and sun shining down on the water.

One morning we took a nature walk. The walk is on a boardwalk and goes into the woods where wildflowers bloom and trees reach to the sky.
There are LOTS of poison ivy! Fields of it!!
Blackberries getting ready to ripen.

Serious conversation....

The birds and squirrels are numerous here in the park. Our official campsite squirrel loves nuts and popcorn and and has become one of the family here.
We mostly enjoy relaxing, reading, just watching the lake, and visiting with our friends and other campers; a beautiful, peaceful spot before returning home and resuming our busy lives.

Spring in the RV: Galveston

After returning from Minnesota, we spent the fall and winter at home and the occasional visit to family and friends in the RV. The winter was pretty cold (by Texas standards) and those camping times were not quite as much fun, having to spend lots of time inside. New Year’s trip found us south of Tyler. We were below freezing for several days and nights.
There were 4 RVs in our group. Two of them froze up and had no water. Dennis and his brother had wrapped the water pedestals as well as the hoses, so we were OK. I told him I would  not complain ever again when he wanted to be over cautious! We did enjoy the days playing cards in our RV with everyone.

Dennis has wanted to try and put the RV in a campground on the bay for a month and come down a few days a week to fish and enjoy the scenery. We had our name on the list at a park on the bay for over a year when a site became available that backs up to the water. So for the month of March we are parked here at Galveston Bay. We are able to leave the  rig set up and come and go as we can.

Sunset view from behind RV

It is sometimes difficult to decide what to leave and what to take home
and then what to bring back again. But we have managed quite well and it is nice to not have to set up and take everything down each time.

The first week it was a little cool with us wearing wind breakers when outside.  It can be windy on the bay. After that it has been nice weather and I enjoy seeing Spring come to life.

The view from behind the RV
Dennis started doing more salt water fishing this year. There are a few public fishing piers off the sea wall that he has been to. Not catching lots but Tim actually caught a stingray one day while he was fishing with his Dad. He had quite a time getting it off the hook and back in the water.

There are LOTS of birds in the water and on the piers in the spring. They
all squack at once and it can be noisy. At sundown they all go somewhere only to return the next morning. We are told these birds have a peculiar mating ritual. The male bird _______s (you know)… on the pier. The female bird chooses a pile she likes and sits on it. Sometime later the male bird finds her and they fly off together into the sunset to mate for life. Too much information?????

We enjoy sitting out behind the rig watching the activity of the bay and the beautiful sunsets.
There is a boat dock area in the park with an observation dock to watch the boats and a place to fish. It is beautiful in the evenings.

There are lots of other birds and it is fun to watch them swim and walk around and interact with each other.
Looking for food!

We have a pair of ducks who come up behind our RV and sleep. They are not afraid of us and I think they want us to give them food.....

In the park is a mixture of people. The park only rents by the month or longer. Some people come on weekends. Some  are contract workers who stay for an extended period. Not a bad place to come home to for a period of time. We have a couple of displaced people from Hurricane Harvey . One camper housed a mother and adult son. Both of their homes were damaged and they have been here all this time. On one trip
Duck egg in the flowers.
back for us, they were gone so hopefully  they are back in their homes. There is still one FEMA trailer here, but we have not seen them while we are here so don’t know their story. As is usual in an RV Park we have met some nice people. One day when we returned to Galveston, we noticed our satellite dish had been moved to under the RV. There had been a rainstorm the night before and it apparently had blown over as the handle was broken. We never found out who moved it for us, but are grateful they did!

On one of our trips down, we went into Galveston. It was Spring Break so the city was full of people.

We enjoy eating at Fisherman’s Wharf. It is down by the Cruise terminal and it is fun to watch the ship loading and heading out to sea when a ship is in. You can also book a boat tour of the harbor a little down the way, along with more restaurants.

You can walk to the Strand from the restaurant. The Strand is a multiple block area with shops and eateries. Our favorite spot is the ice cream, candy parlor….. The area was filled with people enjoying the weather and their visit to Galveston.

Along the sea wall the surf was pretty high, but even in 60 degree weather there were quite a few of brave people in the water.

We have been to Galveston a number of times, but for those who have not, there is lots to do besides the water. There are several home tours available. These are homes  that survived the big hurricane of 1900 and lots of history with them. Galveston also has an oil museum, boat tour, a pirate ship and Moody Gardens.

Full moon to remember as we leave the bay
